The Lord of the Rings: Trading Card Game

The Lord of the Rings: Trading Card Game (or "LOTR TCG") is a collectible card game based on Peter Jackson's famous film trilogy. Launched by Decipher Inc. in November 2001, the game brings the epic battles of Middle-earth to life through cards featuring iconic images from the films, as well as illustrations created in 2004 by WETA Workshop, which show characters and items that were not explored on screen. In LOTR TCG, two or more players face each other using decks made up of a balanced number of cards from the Free Peoples and the Shadows. In each round, one player takes on the role of the Free Peoples, seeking to advance along a path that culminates in the destruction of the Ring. Meanwhile, the opponents, representing the Shadows, try to thwart this mission by eliminating the heroes or corrupting the ring bearer. The game alternates leadership between the players, ensuring an engaging dynamic every turn. The objective is clear: be the first to cross the nine locations and keep the ring bearer safe at the end of your turn. LOTR TCG stood out on the card game scene, winning two Origins Awards in 2002, including "Best Trading Card" and "Best Graphic Presentation of a Card Game".

Maintaining a balance between support, offensive and defensive cards is essential to having adequate responses during the game.
  • Deck building - Players build their own decks before the game starts. Each deck must follow specific rules in terms of minimum and maximum number of cards and include a balanced set of characters, events and supports to maximize effectiveness in battles and cover possible weaknesses.
