How to play The Grimm Forest

The game is for 2 to 4 players, starting with each player choosing a fairytale character with unique abilities.

Distribute the locations on the board: Wolf Glade, Wolf Forest and People's Village. Place resource markers there.

Each turn, secretly choose a location to obtain resources: wood, straw or bricks. Use building tokens to mark your choice.

Once everyone has revealed their choices, collect resources and build parts of houses with them. A complete house requires a base, walls and a roof.

Fable Cards enable special abilities and change the course of the game, while Fairytale Companions help during construction or collection.

The game ends when a player completes three squares. The winner has the highest score based on the quality and quantity of the squares.

Mechanics of The Grimm Forest

  • Collecting Sets - Players collect resources such as straw, wood and bricks throughout the game to build houses. The aim is to gather sets of these resources to erect different types of house (straw, wood, bricks), which offer different scores. Completing a set of houses before other players can give you a significant strategic advantage.
  • Simultaneous Action Selection - All players choose their actions at the same time, selecting location cards that determine where they will look for resources on the board. This simultaneous choice adds a layer of foresight and strategy, as players must try to guess their opponents' intentions in order to avoid conflict or maximize their own acquisitions.
  • Take that - This mechanic involves directly interfering with other players through the use of fable cards and friend cards. Fable cards allow players to directly sabotage or hinder the actions and resources of others, while friend cards offer special abilities that can benefit the player or also serve as a counterbalance to the opponent's actions.
