How to play Spirit Island

Each player chooses a Spirit with unique abilities. Read their power cards and special abilities to understand how to affect the Invaders and help the Dahans.

The board is divided into different types of terrain: jungles, swamps, mountains and plains. Look out for the invader cards which indicate where they will be exploring.

At the start of each round, reveal a new invader card that shows where they will explore again. Build your strategies around these priority regions.

Use power cards to deal damage, move invaders or defend the Dahans. Plan your actions according to the symbols on the cards to activate your Spirit's elemental bonuses.

Balance between immediate defense actions and long-term actions. Weakening the invaders and spreading presence on the board are essential.

Communicate with other players. Coordinating actions can maximize the impact of each round and prevent invaders from building cities that are too strong.

Some Spirits have powers that generate fear, use this to advance on the fear cards and gain advantages during the game.

The main objective is to eradicate the invaders, but remember that alternating between generating fear and destroying structures can be an effective strategy.

As the game progresses, reassess your tactics to adapt to the new invader cards and challenges that arise. Flexibility is crucial to victory.

This encourages strategic discussion and coordination between players, as everyone plans their actions without fully knowing what the others will do, allowing for creative solutions and quick responses to the invaders' challenges.
  • Hand Management: Each spirit has a hand of power cards representing abilities that can be used to influence the game. Players must carefully manage these cards, balancing between fast and slow power cards, adapting their strategy as new cards are acquired throughout the game.
  • Cooperative: Spirit Island is a cooperative game where players work together to defend the island from colonial invaders. Success depends on strategic interaction, where synergies between the powers of the different spirits can be exploited to protect the native lands and drive out colonists.

  • Modular tray: Spirit Island's board is made up of modules that can be rearranged, providing different combinations of terrain and challenges for each game. This adds variability and replayability, compelling players to adjust their strategies as the island's scenery changes.
  • Automatic Resource Growth: The spirits have a growth phase each turn, where they recover energy and acquire new powers. This mechanic simulates the increase in influence and power of the spirits as the game progresses, allowing for greater strategic development throughout the game.
  • Action Recovery: Used power cards are recovered after a period, allowing players to reuse powerful abilities and adjust their tactics based on what was effective in previous rounds, creating a cycle of learning and strategic innovation.
  • Influence / Majority in the Area: The presence and influence of the spirits in the different areas of the island are crucial to stopping the advance of the settlers. The strategy involves manipulating and maintaining this influence, maximizing the impact of power cards in specific areas to ward off invasion.
  • Campaign / Card-driven battles: The invader deck sets the pace of the game, introducing new threats and challenges every turn. The cards guide the expansion of the invaders and their actions, demanding a carefully planned strategic response from the players.
  • Collecting Sets: Some power cards offer additional advantages when combined with others of similar types or elements. This aspect of the game encourages players to collect and use specific sequences of powers to maximize their effects when defending the island.
  • Solo: Spirit Island can be played by a single player, where one or more spirits are controlled simultaneously. This configuration allows you to explore the complexity of the game in a controlled environment, offering a challenging and strategically rich experience.
