How to play Monopoly: Pokémon Kanto Edition

At the start of the game, each player chooses a theme piece and receives an initial amount of money from the bank. Then it's decided who gets to play using the dice.

Players roll the dice and move their pieces clockwise on the board, collecting, exchanging and trying to master Pokémon properties.

When you land on a property space, you can buy it from the bank if it's available. Otherwise, you pay rent to the owner if it already belongs to another player.

Install Pokémon Centers and Poké Marts on your properties to increase the rent. The more buildings on your property, the more expensive it will be for opponents to land on them.

There are two special decks of cards: Face the Coach and Community Day. When you land on these spaces, you must follow the instructions on the card you draw.

If you fall into the Go to Prison slot, your play will go straight to prison, unless you have a Get Out of Jail Free card.

As soon as you go through the match, you'll receive an amount of money from the bank.

The aim is to be the last player with any money left after the other players have gone bankrupt.

Main objective

The main objective of the game Monopoly: Pokémon Kanto Edition is to accumulate wealth by capturing themed properties, which represent different locations in the Kanto region, and building Poké Marts and Pokémon Centers to collect rent from opponents. Players move around the board with collectibles representing Pokémon characters, take part in gym battles and use Luck and Reversal cards to gain strategic advantages, all with the aim of bankrupting their opponents and becoming the last trainer to keep their fortune.

Mechanics of Monopoly: Pokémon Kanto Edition

  • Auction / Bidding: When a player lands on a property and decides not to buy it at the listed price, the property is put up for auction. All players, including the one who refused to buy, can participate in the auction by bidding. The players make their bids, and the highest bidder takes the property. Strategic bidding can be crucial to acquiring desired properties at a price below market value.
  • Negotiation: Players can trade properties with each other at any time during the game, allowing them to customize their strategies for acquiring sets. Trades can involve only money or include a combination of money, property or free pass cards. Successful negotiations can determine control of strategic territories.
  • Scroll / Rotate and Move: Players roll two standard dice, and the sum determines how many squares they have to move on the board. In some themed versions, such as Pokémon Kanto Edition, there may be additional elements that impact movement, but the basic principle is the same. Falling on certain properties or special squares can then result in actions such as buying, paying rent or picking up lucky cards.
  • Collecting Sets: Acquiring all the properties of the same color or type allows the player to start building, significantly increasing the rental value and improving their ability to generate income. In Pokémon Kanto Edition, completing essential Pokémon sets can give additional advantages or special abilities, reinforcing the strategic importance of completing sets.
  • Elimination of players: A player is eliminated when he loses all his money and property and is unable to pay off his debts. This mechanism intensifies competition during the game, since eliminating competitors is essential for a player to achieve victory. In addition to financial strategy, risk management is crucial to avoid elimination.
