Madagascar Catan Junior

Madagascar Catan Junior is a dynamic and fun game that brings the essence of the classic Catan series to youngsters, set in the vibrant universe of Dreamworks' Madagascar 3 movie. In this game, 2 to 4 players venture to the picturesque island of Madagascar, where they become the iconic characters Alex, Gloria, Marty or Melman. Players compete to build circus tents and wagons, taking advantage of the island's unique resources such as wood, sandbags, popcorn, wool and delicious juice cocktails. Each player starts with two circus tents at strategic locations on the board and uses the resources collected to expand their constructions and attract the help of the fearless Penguins. Strategy is key: the more circus tents a player builds, the more resources they can obtain. However, you have to watch out for the zookeeper's controller, who can complicate your plans! The objective is clear: be the first to assemble all seven of your circus tents and win! Madagascar Catan Junior is a perfect introduction to the world of strategy games, full of fun and adventure.

How to play Madagascar Catan Junior

Choose a color and take the corresponding pieces, which include ships and castles. Each player starts with two castles and two ships on the board.

Roll the dice. Each number corresponds to a specific resource in an area of the board. Players collect resources when the number of the area where they have a castle is rolled.

Use the resources to build more ships and castles. Ships are placed on adjacent sea routes, and castles on islands at the intersections of three routes.

Aim to collect Treasure cards that confer special abilities. They can be exchanged for resources or offer extra actions.

The player can also move the Pirate by getting a pirate card. He blocks off an area, preventing opponents from collecting resources.

The first player to build all their castles or reach the required number of points wins the game.

Mechanics of Madagascar Catan Junior

  • Building Networks and Routes: In Madagascar Catan Junior, players build networks and routes by establishing settlements and trails around the island. The networks represent the players' control over different parts of the map. Settlements are placed at the intersection points of routes and in order to build a new route, the player must have access to the previous route. The efficient construction of these routes is crucial to controlling more land and accessing resources that are essential for progressing in the game.
  • Negotiation: Trading is a key mechanic that allows players to exchange resources with each other in order to build more settlements and routes. Resources can include wood, bricks, wool, wheat and ore. Players must negotiate strategically to obtain the resources they lack, while trying to conserve those that are essential to their own victory strategy. Negotiation skills can determine a player's success or failure, making this mechanic a vital part of the gameplay.
  • Data Scrolling: The dice roll defines which resources players receive each turn. At the start of their turn, a player rolls two dice that determine which resource hexes they produce, distributing those resources to all players with settlements on the edges of those hexes. This mechanic introduces an element of luck into the game, but also requires players to carefully plan the location of their settlements in order to maximize the chances of obtaining the necessary resources each round.
