King of New York

New York never stops, and there's always a new show about to take place. Between towering skyscrapers and the vibrant energy of the city, giant monsters are ready to burst onto the scene and conquer the heart of the metropolis! King of New York is a stand-alone game created by Richard Garfield, which brings back the mechanics of King of Tokyo, while adding exciting new dynamics. You must be the first monster to accumulate 20 victory points (VPs) or the last to stand in a frantic confrontation. Each turn, you roll up to six dice, can repeat the action up to three times, and then use the results to make your moves. The dice allow you to hurt other monsters, heal yourself or store energy to buy power cards with unique powers. One of the great new features is the quest for "Fame". Becoming a star in New York can guarantee you VPs, but this notoriety is ephemeral, so make the most of it while you're in the spotlight. The King of New York board is expansive, allowing each monster to occupy a neighborhood in the city, all competing for glory in Manhattan. When attacking, you can move to another district, either to escape the military troops or look for new opportunities to wreak havoc. You can eliminate buildings and earn bonuses, but beware: the more chaos you cause, the more intense the military reaction will be. The monsters from King of New York can be used in both this game and KoT, but the power-up cards are exclusive. Get ready for a spectacle of destruction and fame that only New York can offer!

How to play King of New York

In King of New York, each player chooses a monster and receives a character sheet, a set of dice and markers. The aim is to be the most feared monster and accumulate 20 victory points or eliminate all the other monsters.

Initially, position all the monsters outside Manhattan. On your turn, roll the six dice up to three times, choosing to keep or reroll any combination. The faces of the dice are: Energy, Attack, Life, Star and Destruction. Each face offers different benefits.

To earn victory points, enter and stay in Manhattan. However, monsters in Manhattan become targets for other players. Once you're in Manhattan, you can attack all the other monsters at once.

Players can spend energy cubes to buy cards that offer long-lasting or temporary bonuses. Pay attention to the balance between aggression and healing, making the most of the cards and dice action.

Use the environment to your advantage by destroying buildings for temporary or permanent benefits. Evaluate when to stay or leave Manhattan to optimize your victory points and sustain your life.

Adapt your strategies throughout the game, as conditions vary as the other monsters accumulate their own powers and points. Concentrate on keeping your stamina high while controlling your position and the cards available.

Main objective

The main objective of the game "King of New York" is to earn victory points by being the dominant monster in New York City. Players take on the role of giant monsters competing to wreak havoc in different districts, defeat military forces and attack each other to control Manhattan. The first player to accumulate 20 victory points or be the last surviving monster wins the game.

Tips for playing King of New York

Here are some tips for doing better in the game King of New York:

  • Energy management: Prioritize the careful use of your energy, deciding wisely between healing, dealing damage or buying power cards.

  • Pay attention to power cards: they can change the course of the game. Invest in skills that complete your strategy.
  • Manage your health: Avoid staying in Manhattan for too many consecutive rounds if your life is low.
  • Restrict your opponents: Use skills and cards that make opponents lose valuable resources, such as energy or stars.

Mechanics of King of New York

Of course! Here's a detailed list of the mechanics of the King of New York game:
  • Elimination of Players - While monsters battle for supremacy, they can be eliminated when their life reaches zero. A player is removed from the game when their monster loses all its life points.
  • Data Scrolling - At the start of their turn, a player rolls six personalized dice that determine their actions. The dice have different symbols, including attacks, energy, healing and destruction, and each symbol offers the player different actions.
  • Force Your Luck - Players can choose to keep or reroll some or all of the dice up to two additional times after the first roll, allowing them to try to obtain more advantageous combinations.
  • Take that - Monsters outside Manhattan can attack the monster in the district and vice versa; while in Manhattan, monsters can attack all those outside that district. It's a direct attack mechanic between monsters.
  • King of the Hill - Being in Manhattan is advantageous; monsters in Manhattan automatically gain victory points at the start of the turn, but cannot heal while they are there. Staying in Manhattan is a risk and reward strategy.
  • Data Symbol Resolution - After the final roll of the dice, players resolve the results based on the symbols: attack (damage to monsters), heart (healing), energy (purchasing resources), and destruction (damaging buildings).
  • Scroll Again and Block - The ability to re-roll dice allows players to manipulate the outcome, while the positions of other players or cards in play can block certain actions or effects.
  • Open Buy - Players spend accumulated energy to buy available upgrade cards that grant additional abilities or advantages. The purchase is visible to all players, allowing them to react to their opponents' purchases.
