How to play Spirit Island: Rough Land

Choose a spirit and take the associated board, power cards and reference card. Place the presence tokens on the appropriate spaces on the spirit's board.

Set up the central board with the island pieces, forming the configuration indicated in the manual, depending on the number of players. Place the Dahan, Invaders, cities and villages on the designated starting locations on the island board.

Prepare and place the decks of Invaders, Explorers and Minor and Major Powers. Remember to also prepare the Fear cards and the Event deck.

Choose a difficulty level and add an Adversary or Scenario card if desired. Adjust the board according to the specific instructions on these cards.

Each turn has several phases: Growth, where you choose a Growth option and recover cards or add presence; Presence, where you gain energy and choose cards to play; Fast Powers, where you resolve the fast powers; Invaders, where you resolve the invaders' actions; Slow Powers, where you resolve the slow powers; and finally Advance turn/sell phase mode.

Focus on protecting the island and the Dahans while generating enough fear to drive away the invaders. Collaborate with other players, combining powers to maximize strategic effectiveness.

Main objective

The main objective of the game "Spirit Island: Bumpy Earth" is, together with other players, to protect a mystical island from invasive colonization, using spirits with elemental powers to repel the invaders and restore the natural balance, while supporting and defending the native Dahans.

Mechanics of Spirit Island: Rough Land

  • Simultaneous Action Selection - During each round, all players choose their actions at the same time, planning their moves together but resolving them in specific steps. This allows for fluid and strategic gameplay, preventing one player from dominating the group's planning.
  • Collecting Sets - Players accumulate sets of power cards that share elements. These elements, when combined correctly, activate the spirits' special abilities, allowing for more powerful effects on the board.
  • Influence / Majority in the Area - In order to protect the island from invaders, players must strategically position their presence and dahan in different areas, ensuring control over these regions and preventing the invaders from establishing themselves and causing damage.
  • Cooperative - All the players work together to achieve a common goal: defending the island from invaders. Success depends on effective communication and coordinated planning between the players, using the unique skills of each spirit.
  • Hand Management - The power cards that players have in their hands must be managed carefully, choosing which cards to play each turn to optimize effects, considering energy costs and activating elemental combinations.
  • Players with Different Skills - Each player takes control of a spirit with unique abilities, powers and playing styles. This provides variety and requires strategies to be adjusted according to each spirit's strengths and weaknesses.
  • Modular Tray - The board is made up of modular pieces that represent the island, allowing for different configurations in each game. This offers high replayability, with new challenges and strategies required for each game.
  • Automatic Resource Growth - Each round, players choose a growth option for their spirits, which can increase their presence on the board, recover energy or buy new power cards, adjusting their strategy as the game progresses.
  • Action Recovery - Some actions use up cards or resources that need to be recovered or renewed. Players should plan to recycle their actions or energies through growth or special effects, ensuring their strategies are sustained in the long term.
