How to play StarCraft: The Board Game

In StarCraft: The Board Game, each player chooses a race: Terran, Protoss or Zerg. Each race has unique abilities and different strategies. The objective is to fulfill the victory conditions listed in the scenarios.

Each game is divided into rounds, and each round has three main phases: Planning, Execution and Regeneration. In Planning, players allocate orders to their bases and territories, and can build units, move troops and develop technology.

In the Execution phase, players reveal and carry out their orders. Combat takes place when rival player units occupy the same territory. Battles are resolved based on the units' abilities and tactical cards.

During the Regeneration phase, players adjust their mission cards, victory points are calculated and reinforcements can be purchased. It's crucial to manage resources and expand territories to ensure a constant flow of units and upgrades.

Brave decisions on tactics and strategy are essential; alliances can be made and broken depending on the circumstances. Monitoring the enemy's movements and adapting your plan can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Mechanics of StarCraft: The Board Game

  • Campaign / Card-driven battles: In StarCraft: The Board Game, battles are resolved through a card system where players choose combat cards to represent unit skills and tactics. Each faction has a different deck, allowing for personalized strategies and adding depth and surprise to the battles.
  • Deck building: Throughout the game, players can acquire cards to improve and customize their combat decks. This allows for the construction of more focused strategies adapted to each player's style of play, adding a layer of strategy and continuous planning.
  • Bags and parts: The game uses physical components such as bags to draw pieces and tokens that represent resources, units and buildings. These pieces are essential for carrying out actions on the board, adding a tactile and strategic element when managing resources and building capabilities.
  • Influence / Majority in the Area: Players compete for control of areas on the board, each providing special resources and advantages. Battles and moves are crucially influenced by the attempt to establish and maintain strategic majorities in these areas.
  • Players with Different Skills: Each faction in the game (Terran, Zerg and Protoss) has unique abilities that reflect their strengths in the StarCraft universe. These asymmetrical powers directly influence the way each faction approaches objectives and combat, promoting different tactical approaches.
  • Area Movement: Players move their units between different areas of the board, trying to capture key regions or position themselves for future battles. Movement is limited by various rules, requiring careful planning to optimize territorial strategy.
  • Modular tray: The board is made up of modular pieces that can be rearranged to create different maps for each match. This variability ensures that each game session is unique, encouraging new exploration and combat strategies.
  • Order Markers: Players' actions are guided by order markers that are allocated each turn. These markers determine the priorities of the actions performed, such as construction or mobilization, and force players to plan their actions in direct response to their opponents' initiatives, creating complexity and strategic tension.
