How to play Furnace

In Furnace, each player takes on the role of a 19th century industrial capitalist, competing in the market for resources, factories and technology.

At the start, each player receives factory cards, which produce resources or transform them to earn points or money.

The game is divided into four rounds, each round consisting of two phases: Auction and Production.

In the Auction phase, players bid for factory cards and upgrade cards. Bids are made using numbered disks.

In the Production phase, players use their factory cards to process and transform resources in order to maximize points and money.

Players must optimize their production chains to expand their industrial empire and win at the end of the four rounds.

The winner is the one who accumulates the most points, obtained mainly through efficient development and good strategic decisions.

Main objective

The main objective of the Forge game is to build an efficient economic engine through industry card auctions and resource processing, maximizing production and profitability over four rounds; players compete to acquire industries that generate and convert resources, and must sequence their actions strategically to multiply their assets and obtain the highest possible profit at the end of the game.

Mechanics of Furnace

  • Players with Different Skills: In "Furnace", each player takes on the role of an entrepreneur with a unique skill that influences strategies and decisions during the game. These skills can include bonuses on certain types of production or advantages in the auction phases, differentiating each player and allowing for different tactical approaches.
  • Auction / Bidding: The auction mechanic is central to "Furnace". Players bid on cards representing industries, using disks of varying values. The auctioned cards determine the industries that players can use to generate resources and profits.
  • Auction: Compensation: When a player is outbid by an industry, they receive compensation in the form of resources. This rule ensures that everyone gets some benefit from the auctions, encouraging participation and trying to exit the auctions strategically.
  • Auction: Fixed Placement: Auction disks have fixed values (1 to 4), and placement is crucial. Once a disc has been placed, it cannot be moved, forcing strategic decisions to be made each auction round to maximize potential winnings or compensation.
  • Auction: Restricted Bidding: Each player can only use one disk of each value per round, which limits the number of times a player can bypass or outbid others. This requires careful management of the moves throughout the rounds.
  • Variable preparation: Before the start of each round, the set of industry cards to be auctioned off is different, creating an ever-fresh scenario and challenging players to adapt their strategies according to the options available in that particular round.
  • Open Buy: After the auction, players develop their acquired industries, which generate resources or benefits. The interaction available allows players to plan how best to use their acquired industry cards to maximize their production and profits at the end of the turn.
  • Auction: Multiple Lot: Several items (in this case, industry cards) are auctioned simultaneously, and players must evaluate and decide which items to focus their efforts on. Players need to assess priorities since they won't be able to focus on all the cards at the same time.
  • Shift order: Progressive: The order of play can change from one round to the next, based on bids or skills, and doesn't always follow the same sequence. This system can affect auction and execution strategies when players need to anticipate their opponents' actions.
